Ohrid: Eastern Europe’s next ‘hottest destination’?

What’s Eastern Europe’s best kept secret / hidden gem / next big thing (or whatever travel cliché you prefer)?

If those ‘places you must visit in 2017’ articles are to be believed it’s Lake Ohrid in Macedonia.

Lonely Planet describes it as “Macedonia’s most seductive destination”.

It’s “brilliant” according to Vogue.com.

Even the Daily Mail agrees: “beautiful Lake Ohrid has it all”.

Wizz Air started flying to Ohrid from London in 2015 which, according to the handful of Macedonians I spoke to, is a big deal.

But despite the noise and cheap flights, Ohrid isn’t a holiday hotspot quite yet.

When I visited in September, there are were a few backpackers but most of the visitors were Macedonian pensioners and young families enjoying the tail-end of the summer sun.

I loved the local holidaymaker atmosphere and it was easy to escape the more touristy parts of the old town.

Not convinced? Take a look at the images below.

The money shot. This is the church of Sveti Jovan. And quite probably the most-Instagrammed image of Ohrid.
This beach is a 30 minute walk past the church of Sveti Jovan.
I made it to the beach! The water was much cleaner than the Ohrid town beaches.
Had a poke around Macedonia’s answer to Butlins (I think) and…
chilled in the shade.
In the opposite direction, you can swim in the more modern part of Ohrid (it can be a bit choppy as there are boats about)
Walk a little bit further and there are some quiet beaches (Ohrid old town on the horizon). A proper road is being built and there are a couple of bars / cafes. It’s probably heaving in August.
Finally, here’s a town ‘beach’ (a concrete jetty really) which was always busy but lots of fun to jump off.

Got a few days in Ohrid? Read my post on a trip to St Naum.
